Installing extra memory and compression accelerator options in Lenovo Storage V7000 Gen2 node canisters

You can update Lenovo Storage V7000 Gen2 node canisters by installing additional memory (increasing the total from 32 GB to 64 GB per node canister) and compression accelerator options.

The same hardware updates must be installed in both node canisters in a control enclosure. If you want to install a new host interface adapter at the same time, see Installing Fibre Channel or 10 Gbps iSCSI/FCoE ports for instructions. You can refer to steps 4 to 17 to add hardware updates to a node canister that is already open. Otherwise, follow this procedure to install hardware updates in both node canisters of a control enclosure.

To install the hardware updates, complete the following steps.

  1. Locate node canister 1, the node canister on the left of the enclosure when viewed from the rear.
  2. Complete Procedure: Removing a Lenovo Storage V7000 Gen2 node canister and return here.
  3. Remove the lid of the canister, as described in Procedure: Removing and replacing the lid of a Lenovo Storage V7000 Gen2 node canister and return here.
  4. Touch the memory update packaging to a metal area of the enclosure, then remove two replacement DIMMs from the package.
  5. Locate a vacant DIMM slot next to the CPU heat sink.
Ensure that the retaining clips of the DIMM slot are open.
  6. Gently place a DIMM from the update package in a vacant slot. Ensure the notches in the DIMM align with the shape of the slot.
  7. Apply even, firm, downwards pressure on the DIMM in its slot until the retaining clips move inwards and engage the edges of the DIMM.
  8. Push the retaining clips inwards to ensure that they are fully engaged with the edges of the DIMM.
  9. Gently pull the DIMM upwards.
If the DIMM becomes dislodged it is not installed correctly, repeat steps 5 to 9.
  10. Repeat steps 5 to 9 to install the second update DIMM in the second vacant DIMM slot.
  11. Locate the compression pass-through adapter in slot 1 of the node canister.
  12. Pull the compression pass-through adapter straight up so that its connecting edge disconnects from the connector on the main board.
  13. Remove the compression accelerator from its package.
  14. Place the connecting edge of the compression accelerator on the connector.
  15. Ensure that the adapter is perpendicular to the canister main board so that the small tab on the top of the bracket is aligned with the alignment hole in the top edge of the slot.
  16. Maintain alignment while applying pressure to the top edge of the adapter opposite the connecting edge to push the connecting edge into the connector.
  17. Check that the adapter is installed squarely in its slot. If the small tab of the mounting bracket is not positioned correctly, pull the adapter out of the slot slightly and repeat steps 14 onwards to install the adapter correctly.
  18. Replace the canister lid, as described in Procedure: Removing and replacing the lid of a Lenovo Storage V7000 Gen2 node canister and return here.
  19. Reinstall the canister into the enclosure from which it was removed in step 2.
If the system is powered, the node canister starts.
  20. Reconnect the cables to the canister, ensuring the cables go into the same ports from which they were removed in step 1.
  21. When the node canister is back online, use the management GUI to check the event log for new events.
    Notes:
    • A 0x71841 event indicates that the new hardware was detected.
    • An event with error code 1199 indicates that a valid hardware change needs to be confirmed.
    • An event with error code 1470 indicates that the two canisters in the enclosure do not have the same hardware configuration. The event is fixed when the second node canister is also updated.
  22. Use the management GUI to run the fix procedures for any errors that may be present.
The node goes offline for a short period while the new hardware is enabled.
  23. Repeat steps 2 to 19 on node canister 2, the node canister on the right of the enclosure when viewed from the rear.
  24. When the node canister is back online, use the management GUI to check the event log for new events and run the fix procedures for any errors present.
The node goes offline for a short period while the new hardware is enabled.
