Replacing the battery in a node canister

To replace a faulty battery with a new one received from CRU / FRU stock, use this procedure.

CAUTION:
The battery is a lithium ion battery. To avoid possible explosion, do not burn. (C007)

To replace a battery:

  1. Identify the node canister containing the faulty battery by following Procedure: Understanding the system status using the LEDs.
  2. Follow Procedure: Removing a node canister to remove the node canister containing the faulty battery.
  3. Open the lid of the canister, as described in Procedure: Removing and replacing lid of a node canister.
  4. Grasping the blue touch points on each end of the battery (see Figure 1), lift the battery vertically upwards until the connectors disconnect.
    Important: As you remove and replace the battery, keep it parallel to the canister system board. Maintain equal force (or pressure) on each end.
  5. Remove the replacement battery from its package.
  6. Grasping the blue touch points on each end of the replacement battery, align the battery above the battery location and gently press the battery down so that its connector fits with the connector in the canister and its alignment pins align with the holes on the canister main board.
  7. Replace the canister lid, as described in Procedure: Removing and replacing lid of a node canister.
  8. Reinstall the canister into the enclosure from which it was removed in step 2.
    • If the replacement battery is sufficiently charged, the node canister starts.
    • If the replacement battery is not sufficiently charged, the node canister does not come online. The battery continues to charge.
  9. Refer to Procedure: Understanding the system status using the LEDs to understand the charge level of the replacement battery.
    If the canister did not restart, use the management GUI to monitor the canister and battery status.
  10. Reconnect the cables to the canister, ensuring that each cable goes into the same port from which it was removed in step 2.
  11. When the canister is back online, check the event log for any new events that might indicate a problem with the reassembly.
