A basic volume is a volume that has only one physical copy. Basic volumes reside in a single pool on one site. In addition, basic volumes are supported in any system topology and are common to all configurations. A basic volume can be of any type of virtualization: striped, sequential, or image. They can also use any type of capacity savings: thin-provisioning, compressed, or none.
