A drive slot represents the location in an enclosure into which a drive can be inserted.
A slot reports where there is a drive present and whether the slot is powered. The drive ID attribute indicates which drive, if any, is in the slot.
Each drive slot has two SAS ports that connect the drive to each canister in the enclosure. Each of these ports can be excluded from the system independently.
Each drive slot must contain either a drive or an empty carrier. The empty carriers have no drive indicators. The numbering scheme for the drive slots is indicated on the right side of the enclosure.
In enclosures that have 12 drives, 3.5-inch drive slots are arranged in four columns of three horizontally mounted drive assemblies. The drive slots are numbered 1-12, starting at the upper left and going left to right, top to bottom.

In enclosures that have 24 drives, 2.5-inch drive slots are arranged in one row of vertically mounted drive assemblies. The drive slots are numbered 1-24, starting from the left. A vertical drive-bay molding is in the center between slots 12 and 13.
Table 2 graphically displays enclosures that have 24 drives, 2.5-inch drive slots. The drive slots are arranged in one row of vertically mounted drive assemblies.
