Replacing a CMOS battery

The complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) battery is a coin-shaped power cell that is mounted inside a node canister. It is used to keep the system time when there is no power to the node canister. The lithium battery must be handled correctly to avoid possible danger. If you replace the battery, you must adhere to all safety instructions.

Use this procedure to replace a CMOS battery. Dispose of the faulty battery properly.
CAUTION:
If your system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer. The battery contains lithium and can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.
Do not:
  • Throw or immerse into water
  • Heat to more than 100°C (212°F)
  • Repair or disassemble
Dispose of the battery as required by local ordinances or regulations. (C045)
  1. Complete Procedure: Removing a node canister.
  2. Open the canister and remove the lid as described in Procedure: Removing and replacing lid of a node canister.
  3. Locate the CMOS battery inside the node canister. Replacing a CMOS battery displays the battery location.

  4. Push the coin cell latch to the side to release the coin cell from its holder, and then remove the expired coin cell.
  5. Orient the replacement coin cell with the flat side facing the canister wall nearest the holder.
  6. Gently push the coin cell down into the holder so that it springs under the latch.
  7. Replace the canister lid as described in Procedure: Removing and replacing lid of a node canister.
  8. Reinsert the canister into the slot from which it came.
  9. Reconnect all cables.
  10. Open the management GUI.
  11. Use the management GUI to check that the time and date settings of the system are correct.
  12. In the event log view, if a CMOS battery error is present, run the fix procedure.
